Proximal Nail Fold

The proximal nail fold is the skin area that borders the base of the fingernail or toenail, located at the nearest end to the center of the body. It consists of soft tissue that forms a fold over the nail matrix, which is responsible for nail growth. The proximal nail fold plays a crucial role in protecting the nail matrix and underlying structures from infection and injury. It can be examined for signs of health and disease. Changes in the appearance of the proximal nail fold, such as swelling, redness, or changes in colour, can indicate various medical conditions, including skin disorders, autoimmune disease, or infection. It is also an area of interest in dermatology for diagnosing conditions like nail psoriasis, neoplasms, and other nail disorders.
