NAIL FUNGUS

Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a common condition that can affect both fingernails and toenails. It is caused by various types of fungi that can enter the nail through small cracks or cuts in the skin. Symptoms of nail fungus include discoloration, thickening, brittleness, and a distorted shape of the nail. In some cases, the nail may also emit a foul odour.

Toenails are more commonly affected than fingernails, and the fungus often thrives in warm and moist environments, such as sweaty shoes or communal showers. People with weakened immune systems, diabetes, or circulation problems are more susceptible to nail fungus.

Treatment for nail fungus may include oral antifungal medications, medicated nail creams or ointments, or, in severe cases, surgical removal of the affected nail. It can take several months for the infection to clear up, and there is a risk of recurrence.

Preventive measures include keeping the feet clean and dry, wearing breathable shoes and socks, and avoiding walking barefoot in communal areas.

Nail infections can also be caused by bacteria or yeast. Bacterial infections can result from an injury to the nail or surrounding skin, creating an opening for bacteria to enter and cause infection. Yeast infections can occur in the area around the nail and often appear as red, swollen, and tender skin.

Treatment for bacterial or yeast nail infections may include topical or oral antibiotics, antifungal medications, and proper wound care. In severe cases, surgical drainage of the infected area may be necessary.

It is important to seek medical attention for persistent or severe nail infections to prevent complications and reduce the risk of the infection spreading to other parts of the body. Regular hand and foot hygiene, keeping nails trimmed and clean, and wearing appropriate footwear can help prevent nail infections.
