The Nail Plate

The nail plate, often referred to simply as "the nail," is the visible part of the nail. It is composed of densely packed keratin cells. This compact structure gives the nail its strength and flexibility. It is important to note that the nail plate is made up of non-living, keratinized cells.

While the nail plate itself is translucent, the pink appearance comes from the blood vessels that lie underneath. The underside of the nail plate features grooves that help anchor it to the nail bed and maintain proper nail growth. The primary function of the nail plate is to protect the living nail bed beneath, which is the area where we perform nail treatments.
