Hyponychium

The hyponychium, a vital component of the nail anatomy, is a thin layer of tissue situated beneath the free edge of the nail at the distal end of the nail bed. Composed of keratinized skin, it serves as a protective barrier, safeguarding the area between the fingertip and the nail from potential infections and contaminants. Beyond its role as a barrier, the hyponychium contributes to the overall health and integrity of the nail structure. While typically not visible under normal circumstances, it may become apparent in the event of a nail injury or certain nail-related conditions.
