Eponychium

The eponychium, also known as the cuticle, is a delicate and vital part of nail anatomy. It can be visualized as a thin, specialized layer of skin cells concealed beneath the proximal nail fold. This structure is responsible for maintaining nail health by forming a protective barrier of non-living skin cells that act as a shield for the nail matrix, safeguarding it from harmful bacteria and germs, often referred to as opportunistic pathogens. In essence, the eponychium functions as the vigilant gatekeeper of the nail, ensuring that unwanted intruders are kept at bay. Without its protective function, the nails would be left defenceless against a myriad of potential threats.
